How to Introduce Coloring to a Toddler

A gentle, practical guide to a toddler’s first coloring sessions — what to expect, how to set up, and how to keep it fun and pressure-free.

A toddler’s first experiences with coloring are less about staying in the lines and more about discovering that a crayon leaves a mark. Keeping that early sense of delight is the whole goal — neat colouring comes much later, and it comes on its own.

Start big and simple

Choose a page with one large shape and a thick outline — a circle, a ball or a single friendly animal. A busy scene with lots of small areas can feel overwhelming to a child who is still learning to hold a crayon. Our First Coloring and Shapes collections are built for exactly this stage.

Sit alongside, not across

Colour a little yourself on your own sheet. Toddlers learn by copying, and seeing you make relaxed, happy marks gives them permission to do the same. Resist the urge to correct — every scribble is a success.

Keep sessions short

Two or three minutes is plenty at first. End while it is still fun, and the crayons become something your child looks forward to rather than a chore.

Talk as you go

Name the picture, its colour and the sound it makes. “A red apple — crunch!” This turns a quiet activity into a warm, language-rich moment together.
